A Life I Never Expected to Live

Hi, I’m Cynthia, founder of WidowSavvy. In 2007, at 35 years old, I became a widow unexpectedly. That morning started like any other. My husband, Ben, kissed me goodbye, told me he loved me, and reminded me to call the contractor about the home we were remodeling. A short time later, he collapsed at work.

By the time I reached the hospital, he was gone.

Suddenly, I was raising three children, managing a home, facing financial and practical decisions I had never expected to make alone, and trying to imagine a future that looked nothing like the one I had planned. For a long time, I was simply surviving.

Over time, I went back to work, built a career, became a Registered Nurse, raised my children, made plenty of mistakes, learned things I never expected to need to know, and slowly built a life of my own. That journey is why I created WidowSavvy.

Moving Forward, Not Moving On

WidowSavvy goes beyond grief to help women navigate the life that still has to be lived after losing a spouse. While many widowhood resources understandably focus on grief and bereavement, we focus on the practical, personal, and everyday questions that come with building a life you never expected to live.

Our approach is warm, real, hopeful, and judgment-free. We can talk about death and paperwork one day—and careers, money, parenting, cooking, travel, friendships, dating, relationships, confidence, identity, laughter, or starting over the next. Widowhood is the common thread, but it does not have to become a woman’s entire identity.

We believe moving forward isn’t moving on. The life you shared with your spouse mattered. The person you lost mattered. Loving and honoring that life does not mean you cannot build another beautiful chapter for yourself. Life can become beautiful again.
